    NESQUEHONING – Newswatch 16 has learned a police officer involved in a deadly crash in Carbon County has been placed on unpaid administrative leave. Nesquehoning’s borough council voted Wednesday night to put officer Steven Homanko on unpaid leave, according to borough Council President David Hawk.     Amish Man Arrested for Allegedly Molesting 8 Children

    WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP — An Amish man was arrested Wednesday afternoon  after State Police said he allegedly molested eight children. Troopers arrested John Beiler, 47, from Allenwood in Union County. Authorities said Beiler molested five girls and three boys in Washington over a 15-year period ending in 2012. The victims ranged in age from an infant to children in their teens. Beiler is locked up in Lycoming County prison in lieu of $250,000 bail.


    Vandals Destroy Home in Williamsport

    WILLAMSPORT — Police in Williamsport want to know who trashed the interior of a home. Pictures of the property along Penn Street were posted on the Williamsport Police Department’s Facebook page. The pictures show doors ripped off of hinges, graffiti and holes in walls. Officers in Williamsport told Newswatch 16 the place was unoccupied but was in the process of being rented.

    Local Students Compete in National Spelling Bee

    Two children from our area are in the national spelling bee in Washington D.C. Tushan Dargan, 9,  is a 5th grader at Good Shepherd Academy in Edwardsville. He is one of the youngest competitors at the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Devina Singh, 13, is an 8th grader at North Schuylkill Junior/Senior High School in Ashland.     Fallen Officers Remembered

    Two fallen officers from our area were remembered during a moving ceremony in Washington D.C. Tuesday evening. Many paid tribute to the lost heroes at the law enforcement memorial in the nation’s capital. Corrections officer Eric Williams was killed by an inmate while on duty at the federal prison near Waymart back in February of last year.     Deadly Fire in the Poconos

    POLK TOWNSHIP – A man is dead after a fire in Polk Township, according to the coroner. Flames broke out at the home on Mountain Road in Polk Township around 8:15 p.m. Tuesday. The coroner’s office identified the victim as William Berry, 69. Officials said he died from smoke inhalation. Two others lived there. One was taken to the hospital. There is no word on the cause.

    Family of Six Displaced After Fire

    WILLIAMSPORT — A family of six is staying elsewhere after a fire broke out Monday evening in Williamsport. Firefighters were called to the home on Memorial Avenue just before 8 p.m. in the city. Investigators said they the fire started in the kitchen and spread to the second and third floors. Fire officials believe the fire started after food was left unattended on the stove but the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.

    SCRANTON — Police in Scranton said a man has admitted to setting two brush fires. Officers arrested Michael Wademan, 24, of Scranton. Authorities believe Wademan started two fires Monday in the city’s south side. One near Connell Park and the other near Skyview Apartments.     Man Charged with Stealing Thousands of Dollars from Company

    JESSUP — In Lackawanna County, Police in Jessup said they’ve arrested a man from West Pittston on theft charges. Officers say Doyle Lewis, 42, stole more that $67,000 while he handled loss prevention for the Compass Group, a cafeteria service that services TMG Health in Jessup. Authorities claimed Lewis failed to make 41 cash deposits at a bank for the company in Lackawanna County.

    WHITE MILLS —People remembered a young boy who died from a gunshot wound over the weekend. Folks gathered to remember Hunter Pedersen. The ten year-old boy died at his grandmother’s house in Pike County on Saturday after a gun his uncle allegedly was showing him went off.     DERRY TOWNSHIP — WNEP-TV received two awards today at the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters luncheon held at The Hotel Hershey in Dauphin County. Newswatch 16’s Amanda Kelley and photographer Mike Cholko won for their story on Challenger Baseball. Action 16’s Dave Bohman and photographer Paul Kielbasa took home a PAB award for an investigative report on “The Faces of Meth.”

    UPDATE: Body Found in Susquehanna River Identified

    MESHOPPEN — State police said that the body found in the Susquehanna River in Wyoming County earlier this week is Thomas Yates of New York. Officials said Yates’ body was pulled from the water in Meshoppen Thursday afternoon after people on a passing train spotted the body. According to authorities, Yates reportedly ended up in the river back in March while he and his brothers were on a bridge in Laceyville. State police said the brothers were fighting at the […]
