    TUNKHANNOCK – Parents in the Tunkhannock area school district have been notified about a case of pertussis in the middle school. A letter was posted on the district’s website which alerted parents that their children may have been exposed to pertussis which is commonly referred to as whooping cough.   • Young Couple From Our Area Involved in Murder-Suicide

    CLARKSVILLE, TENNESSEE — Authorities are investigating a possible murder-suicide involving two young people from our area. The deaths happened in Tennessee. Deashawn Thomas, 21, and Katelyn Thomas, 18, both of Scranton, moved to Tennessee, according to police. Deashawn was in the army and stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Police believe Deashawn killed Katelyn Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning inside their home. He then drove off, made a U-turn on a highway, and drove head-on into a tractor trailer.   • Suspicious Fire Under Investigation in Larksville

    LARKSVILLE –  Investigators in Luzerne County are calling a fire in Larksville suspicious. Flames broke out just before 5:30 Wednesday evening  on Hillside Avenue. The fire chief says no one has lived here for 20 years and no utilities were hooked up to the building. The fire remains under investigation in Luzerne County.

  • Case of Zika Virus Confirmed at Lehigh University

    There is a confirmed case of the Zika virus at Lehigh University. According to the college’s website, one student who traveled abroad over winter break tested positive. She recovered and is feeling well. The health and wellness center has been in contact with state health officials, who claim there is no additional health risk to anyone on campus.   • UPDATE: Man arrested after Meth Lab Bust

    MADISON TOWNSHIP — One man is charged after a meth lab bust in Lackawanna County. Crews in hazmat suits were called to the home on Haas Pond Road near Moscow around 6 p.m. Thursday and took David Prestosh, 34, of Moscow into custody. The arrest stems from a month-long investigation from the Attorney General’s office. Prestosh was charged with manufacturing methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.   • Fire in Wilkes-Barre Ruled Arson

    WILKES-BARRE – A fire in Wilkes-Barre over the weekend is a case of arson. So far, no arrests have been made. According to crews, a double block home on Carey Avenue burned on Saturday. Both sides were empty, but nearby homes were evacuated. No one was hurt. Authorities have not said if they have any suspects for the arson.

  • Elderly Couple Killed After Crash in Schuylkill County

    WAYNE TOWNSHIP – An elderly couple from Pottsville is dead after a crash in Schuylkill County Friday night. State Police said the husband and wife’s car wrecked when it hit a guiderail around 5 p.m.  along Route 183 and Blue Mountain Road in Wayne Township. Officials identity the victims as a Edwardine Hahn, 77,  who died at the scene and George Hahn, 81,  who passed away shortly after the crash at a hospital in Reading.

    We want to take a moment to wish a former member of Newswatch 16 a very happy 80th birthday. Jack Ruland was the station’s pilot back in 1979 and operated Skycam 16 until 1999 when he retired.     JERSEY SHORE — Patches, a school crossing guard dog, that got  fired from his old job has a new gig in Lycoming County. The five-year-old Maltese poodle mix has been hired as a security guard dog and Good Will Ambassador at Country Beary Shack in Jersey Shore. The new job includes a new uniform.   • Police Search For Robber in Wilkes-Barre

    WILKES-BARRE – Police  are searching for the person who robbed a gas station in Wilkes-Barre. It happened just before 4:30 p.m. Monday at the PSC Gas Station on South Main Street. The suspect allegedly showed a knife during the robbery. Wilkes-Barre police have not released how much money the suspect got away with. There were no reports of any injuries.
