DENNISON TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- A small number of customers around our viewing area are still without electricity after strong winds swept through Wednesday, downing trees and power lines.

One homeowner in Luzerne County had a tree land on his house.

The tree came down Wednesday, putting a hole in the roof and destroying a porch on the place on Tunnel Road near White Haven.

A trip from California to visit his elderly parents took an unexpected turn in Luzerne County.

Jeff Devine tells Newswatch 16 strong winds on Wednesday caused a pine tree to fall on his parents' house near White Haven.

No one was injured but Devine said it could've been much worse.

"Mom was just getting ready to come out this front door right here and that's where the tree hit and Shelly said something and she turned around and they went back in the house and that's where the tree hit," Devine recalled.

Last week, Jeff and his wife Shelly Devine drove 3,000 miles from their home near Sacramento to help his elderly parents Tom and Shirley Jones who were struggling to pay their bills.

"It's just one thing after another right now so we just want to make sure everything is safe for them," Shelly Devine said.

Now with damages to the roof, a blocked-in front door, and a demolished porch, the Devine's weeklong trip has been extended indefinitely.

"We are supposed to head back Saturday morning but I don't think we can. We have to stay. We are going to have to stay and help for a while."

Jeff tells Newswatch 16 his parents built this house from the ground up back in the 1980s. He and his wife plan to do all they can to make sure his parents will be able to call this place home.

"This is all them. We just want them to retain their independence here."

The Devines say they'll deal with it all one step at a time. The first step is to find volunteers to help remove the tree.
