UPDATE: Interstate 84 was a mess throughout Pike County. the Highway was closed for hours after that slick ice sent vehicles sliding off the road, even here at a rest stop along I-84 east before the Tafton exit.

There are still a number of tractor-trailers along I-84. Some are being towed, others, waiting for a tow crew.

Emergency crews say it started Wednesday morning around 3 a.m. Crash after crash after crash, all because of a thin glaze of ice on the roads.

As far as injuries, they were only minor, but the job of responding to the emergencies then handling more and more wrecks has made for a tough morning for first responders.

"You would've been better off with ice skates on," said Tafton Fire Chief Mike Miller. "We kept getting dispatched and we kept asking for mutual aid to assist us because we couldn't close enough of the roads down. Cars were still trying to drive, not realizing, I guess, the road conditions. It was just causing havoc. We had, I believe, about 16 vehicles that were either jack-knifed or on their side."

The ice is no longer a problem on the interstates however some back roads were quite treacherous across Pike and Wayne Counties.

ORIGINAL STORY: PIKE COUNTY -- Sections of a highway in Wayne and Pike Counties were closed due to several crashes and icy conditions on Wednesday.

According to the Tafton fire chief, Interstate 84 was closed from Exit 17 (Hamlin/Newfoundland) to the New York State line.

The chief says there were about 16 crashes.

A crash near mile marker 45 was cleared by around 10 a.m., according to PennDOT.

"People keep coming on and wrecking we're running out of resources," Tafton Fire Chief Mike Miller.

I-84 was closed in both directions.
