SCRANTON -- Today is Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent for Christians around the world.
Roman Catholics had ashes placed on their forehead Wednesday morning at St. Peter's Cathedral in Scranton.
Parishioners believe the ashes are a symbol of their mortality.
The six-week season of Lent ends on Easter Sunday, which falls on April 1 this year.
