Video Vault: Schuylkill Mall Grand Opening

Demolition is underway on the Schuylkill Mall.

It wasn't that long ago when the mall was the place to be in the Frackville area.

The mall first opened for business in October of 1980. Newswatch 16's Joan Barnish takes us back to that day in this visit to the Video Vault.

I am from this area. Everybody wants to blame Wal Mart and online shopping the decline of the mall. In reality, the failure of the mall to evolve and the area’s demographics was it’s downfall. They never remodeled or added a wing. I also get a real kick out all the people who swear up and down that the building was designed to be a prison!

How can an area decline this much? The population in Frackville is down 25 percent, the mall closes, the downtown is dead, drugs and slumlords took over most of the immediate area and the ones who stayed in the area with degrees became teachers in declining districts, which just raises the taxes. There is no win for anyone here.

Skooks still dress like that. Difference is that the people’s intelligence has sunk so low. Like a swift process of retardation throughout the area. Just talk to any current resident nowadays. Sad, crude, backwards people with loads of sexual confusion. Please pray for them.

1992 – come on – you still live here – if you badmouth the area, you’re badmouthing yourself and all of us!
The best thing we have here – the firemen. You can’t forget about them firemen y’all. We have the best.
Sure there are downsides like the homeless off I-81 and in the Vo-tech woods, but every city has that
And we got the kielbossi yo.
