MONROE COUNTY -- Snow made for some slick driving conditions in certain parts of our area Thursday. The winter storm system moving up the east coast is brushing our area.
Snow-covered roadways and wind drifts made driving on Route 940 in Mount Pocono difficult for some people who were out and about during this snowy January day.
Michael Turner from Tobyhanna says he had to come out in this mess to buy jugs of water after the pipes at his house froze.
"I think it's very, very cold and we have lived up here for years and we should be used to this by now. I just came back from Atlanta and it's freezing there also," he laughed.
Because of the winter weather, PennDOT officials reduced speed limits to 45 miles an hour on certain highways including Interstates 80 and 380 and Routes 209 and 33. The speed limits were restored to normal late Thursday afternoon.
Tommy Davis from Blakeslee says Interstate 80 near Stroudsburg wasn't all that bad, but as he traveled west, it changed very quickly.
"I don't think I'll ever get used to changing weather like this. You just have to tolerate it, wait until it blows over, and take it from there."
Borough managers in Mount Pocono tell Newswatch 16 they are ready for the winter season. In fact, they just ordered three truckloads of salt to make sure they have enough.
Dave Elders is a road maintenance worker for the borough. He says workers have been out for several hours trying to clear roads for drivers.
"You got to keep trolling the roads and making sure there are no drifts. Even in this temperature, the salt just doesn't cut it. It will melt and automatically freeze over again," Elders said.
