NBC Fires Matt Lauer After Complaint About ‘Inappropriate Sexual Behavior’

Matt Lauer was fired from NBC News on Wednesday after an employee filed a complaint about “inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace,” the network announced.

Savannah Guthrie made the announcement at the top of the “Today” show, where Lauer has been an anchor for two decades.

NBC News chairman Andrew Lack said in a memo to staff that it was the first complaint lodged against Lauer in his career at the network. But he said “we were also presented with reason to believe this may not have been an isolated incident.”

The firing removes one of the most recognizable personalities on television, and at a time when morning news programs are increasingly important to network news divisions.

Just last week, CBS News fired one of its own morning anchors, Charlie Rose, after a report in The Washington Post chronicled years of sexual misconduct.

Guthrie said she was informed just moments before going on the air.

“This is a sad morning at ‘Today’ and NBC News,” she said. “As I’m sure you can understand, we are devastated. I’m heartbroken for Matt. He is my dear, dear colleague.”

Guthrie also said she was heartbroken for the woman who accused Lauer of misconduct, noting “it’s long overdue” that women feel comfortable coming forward against abusive men.

Hoda Kotb, on the set with Guthrie, said she has known Lauer for years and “loved him as a friend and a colleague.”

“It’s hard to reconcile the man who walks in every day” with the person who was identified in the complaint, she said.

Lauer, 59, was named a co-anchor of “Today” in January 1997 after three years as the newsreader.

Here is the full statement from NBC News Chairman Andy Lack:

Dear Colleagues,

On Monday night, we received a detailed complaint from a colleague about inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace by Matt Lauer. It represented, after serious review, a clear violation of our company’s standards. As a result, we’ve decided to terminate his employment. While it is the first complaint about his behavior in the over twenty years he’s been at NBC News, we were also presented with reason to believe this may not have been an isolated incident.

Our highest priority is to create a workplace environment where everyone feels safe and protected, and to ensure that any actions that run counter to our core values are met with consequences, no matter who the offender.

We are deeply saddened by this turn of events. But we will face it together as a news organization — and do it in as transparent a manner as we can. To that end, Noah and I will be meeting with as many of you as possible throughout the day today to answer your questions.

Andy

It’s apparent that many are angry, or scared, because now they can’t get away with treating other people however they feel like treating them. All of this enlightenment has nothing to do with feminism or LBGTQ. It’s about treating people fairly and respectfully. It shouldn’t have to be that hard, but it is, because it’s behavior that has to be rethought and retaught.

eons of man spreading the seed to keep the human race going isn’t just going to go away because a few liberal dopes are offended.

This is sad, for all involved. I hope companies and the government are actually making sure the claims are accurate and defensible, otherwise what is the difference between what is happening and a lynch mob? Certainly, if someone is guilty then let the consequences fall where they may.

Just goes to show the stark difference that progressives accept the consequences and are responsible for their own actions……those in the GOP, not so much…..

In a related story, more cutbacks at ESPN are happening. How’s that related? In part, that started with some NFL players taking a knee. Apparently some in NBC were taking two knees.

Why? He’s one of the worst serial sexual harassers! That’s just the stuff we know about! Apparently it doesn’t count if you’re conservative *eyeroll*

Why hasn’t the Party of Pedophiles disavowed Ray Moore? Or the Russian puppet illegally occupying the Oval Office?

How does Washington elect people? I thought politicians were elected by the voters. I know it’s always someone else’s fault and all.

      • Really?

Just the contrast is all. Hollywood’s accusers are clearly telling the truth and need to be taken seriously. Washington’s accusers (except for Al Franken’s) are attention seeking harpies. Its easy to believe who one likes when it’s convenient. Hollywood perverts lose support. Washington perverts (in red conspicuously) get a boosr in the polls.

Hollyweird is never going to run out of sickos , Howard Hughes used to pay photographers for info on the new dolls and elaborate scams to sleep with them and protect his money . Just a changing of the guard is all it is ( Don’t look behind the curtain . )

You are hilarious, Trucker, and not just when you drop your drawers. By the way, shouldn’t you be slamming into a station wagon full of nuns right about now?

Probably was a quick and effective way to get out of an expensive contract with a guy unable to get ratings, due to his credibility being in the toilet. Another liberal democrat hack will take his place.

This statement seems irrelevant, and also not true. Most people do care. But what are we supposed to do about it from where we are? Besides, the majority of them don’t care what we think of their practices.

the middle east is not OUR country and really not our concern. Would you want them coming over here trying to change our Laws to theirs? I’m all for basic humanity, and I don’t agreee with how woman are treated there, but America buts its nose into too many things that don’t concern us. There’s woman abused in our country everyday, kids starving and homeless, let’s worry about USA, shall we?
