What We Know About Texas Church Shooting Suspect

SUTHERLAND SPRINGS, Texas — A picture is starting to emerge of the suspected gunman in a deadly mass shooting at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas.

Two law enforcement sources briefed on the investigation identified the shooter as Devin Patrick Kelley, 26.

What we know about the shooting

Kelley was once a member of the US Air Force, spokeswoman Ann Stefanek said. He served in logistics readiness at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico, starting in 2010.

Kelley was court-martialed in 2012 for two counts of Article 128 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, assault on his spouse and assault on their child, Stefanek said. Kelley received a bad conduct discharge, confinement for 12 months and a reduction in rank, she said. The Air Force did not provide a date of the discharge.

Kelley is accused of killing 26 people, including the 14-year-old daughter of the church’s pastor, and injuring more.

A man who lives next door to the church grabbed his own gun and approached Kelley as he was leaving after the shooting. The gunman dropped a rifle in front of the church and fled in his car, officials said.

Kelley was found dead in his car from a gunshot wound about eight miles from the church, a law enforcement official briefed on the investigation told CNN. It’s not clear if he shot himself or if the neighbor shot him.

Kelley purchased the Ruger AR-556 rifle in April 2016 from an Academy Sports & Outdoors store in San Antonio, a law enforcement official told CNN.

When Kelley filled out the background check paperwork at the store, he checked the box to indicate he didn’t have disqualifying criminal history, the official said. He listed an address in Colorado Springs, Colorado when he bought the rifle, the official said.

Deadly mass shootings in modern US history

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott called the incident the largest mass shooting in the state’s history.

Yeah, just get one at the local Academy Sports store. What’s wrong with it? It’s just a mental problem, it has nothing to do with the military style killing instruments he had in his possession that are so easily available. What’s next, having to be patted down before prayer? Then afterwards go to Target with your child to get some ice cream while staring at a guy walking around with an automatic? It’s time to get out of dark ages, America. I refuse to get a gun. Shoot me, I don’t care. I will go into eternity unblemished by your hysteria and power lust.

    • Armed citizen

And I plan on going into eternity knowing I did everything I could spiritually and physically to protect my loved ones. You’re welcome to cower behind me when the bullets start flying. I’ll be the one shooting back at the bad guy.

      • sick of fake news

Funny how these libtards don’t mention it was an ARMED CITIZEN who stopped this @$$hole. Let’s watch how the fake news buries that aspect of it. Or likely, they’ll call for an investigation of whether or not the Good Samaritan had ties to Russia.

  • give me a break

It’s always “just another nutjob” (when it’s a white good ol’ boy) and “we can’t stop these things from happening.” Your cowardly, power-hungry, we-need-term-limits-but-they-don’t-apply-to-me GOP, on orders from their NRA masters, passed legislation (well actually overturned an Obama regulation) to allow over 75,000 severely mentally people ill to buy weapons. And we can’t do *anything*?…bite me.

    • Nobama

And thanks to HIPAA and the defunding and closing of mental institutions, there are plenty more just waiting to take his place. People that should be institutionalized or in prison walk among us. I’m all for keeping guns out of the hands of the evil and insane. I’m also all for the training and arming of those with the fortitude to not be a victim, and not be victimized and villainized by the anti-gun crowd.

    • I’ll wait for your answer

ANY regulation turned over from Obama and his traitorous regime is a good one. So: Can you prove that the shooter was ineligible to legally posses firearms prior to the ruling?

      • Predictable

fakenews, it was the fault of the congregation they weren’t armed. They were asking to be shot to death. We all know those toddlers should have been carrying! Don’t worry though, those dead folks were probably all just “takers.”

      • Givemeabreak

We already did that. It was called the Wild West. I don’t think your idea is all that great either. There is no easy answer. Maybe start with the lack of moral compass that most have today and the lack of values.

      • warningfakenews

When terrorists strike, they look for soft targets- seldom do they want to strike military outposts or police stations. “Gun free zones” are as soft as targets can become.

Every toddler there had an adult with them who in part, is responsible for their safety. If it takes carrying a weapon to be able to insure their safety, then that’s what’s prudent to do.

      • Reciprocity now

I carry and I’m prepared to take action. So why is it that I’m a legal gun owner and concealed carry permitted in my home state of PA, but I’m an automatic criminal if I exercise the same things in our neighboring states of NY and NJ? Why is it my employer doesn’t allow lawful carry? Why is it that some stores, shops, and places of public assembly shun and ‘prohibit’ the same? We will never – ever – remove evil and criminal intent until Jesus returns. Until then, we need to be prepared to defend and protect. Otherwise, you’re just another sheep to the slaughter.

    • sick of fake news

Enough for what? More gun laws? It was already illegal for this nutjob to own a gun plus this guy was stopped by someone who legally was carrying. Remember that before you want to infringe on everyone’s rights, pal.
