Bomb Threat, Bank Robbery in Wilkes-Barre

WILKES-BARRE — Police are investigating reports of a bank robbery involving a bomb threat at a bank branch in Wilkes-Barre.

WILKES-BARRE -- Police are looking for the robber who held up a bank in Wilkes-Barre Monday morning by threatening the teller with a bomb.

Wilkes-Barre police evacuated the Community Bank branch on North Franklin Street as well as closed down a section of the street because of that bomb threat.

Traffic was blocked for hours, keeping many people from accessing that portion of the street, like Henry Doran who needed to deliver a package to the building next to the Community Bank shortly after the robbery.

"The way it is anymore, you never know day-to-day what is going to happen," Doran said.

Police say a man walked into the bank just after 10:30 a.m. and left a package on the counter which they believe could be a bomb so they evacuated the bank.

A bomb squad from Scranton was called in to deal with the package left behind. They found the package not to be dangerous.

The heavy police presence near the bank drew a lot of attention downtown.

"Yeah, it's actually frightful because I walk here a lot, and to know that this is going on and everything, it's crazy," Wilkes University student Rami Kazimi said.

Police say there were no injuries in the robbery, and they do not know if the suspect got away with cash.

The suspect is still on the loose. Police believe he may have gotten away in a white van. They had a helicopter out searching for him.
