WILKES-BARRE -- Stormy weather hit parts of Luzerne County Monday afternoon with strong winds, hail, and downpours.

The rains came hard and fast, flooding city streets and trapping drivers in their vehicles in Wilkes-Barre.

Schiel’s Family Market on Hanover Street was flooded with more than six inches of water.

"During the height of this storm, one of the challenges was here at Schiel's Supermarket where there were about 30 customers stuck. Due to the high water, we just had to evacuate them in a safe manner and that's what we did,” said Wilkes-Barre Fire Chief Jay Delaney.

It wasn't just rain that pounded down as storms blew through.

"There was so much hail at our house that our entire deck was just covered in ice for a while,” said Alyssa Evarts of Wilkes-Barre.

"The entire front looked like it was snowing out. I was curious so I looked and there was like inch balls of hail,” said Jared Marsellas of Hanover Township.

It was a busy afternoon for the city's Department of Public Works. Workers were out cleaning up and clearing drains as streets flooded, leaving drivers left trapped inside their vehicles.

Police blocked access to some streets.

"People are driving through it. I guess they're trying to stop them. A car goes through it every so often and they have to chase them,” said Kenny Coolbaugh of Wilkes-Barre.

The floodwaters receded quickly, leaving debris behind.
