SCRANTON -- Police in Scranton say a woman died after she was rescued from the Lackawanna River Tuesday afternoon.
Police identified the woman as Danee Mower, 28, of Scranton.
Detectives have arrested Ryan Taylor, 24, of Scranton. They say he threw Mower about 11 feet down into the water after the two fought on the river bank. Mower was found face down in the water.
Police said Taylor told them he and Mower were fighting over marijuana.
On Wednesday, the coroner said Mower died from the combined effects of hypothermia and drowning. Police and the D.A.'s office are now investigating the case as a homicide.
It was a frantic scene along the river near Olive Street as rescue crews raced to pull the woman from the water.
Fire and police were called around 2 p.m. for a report of a person in the river.
A man hiking along the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail came upon all the commotion.
“I saw all the police officers and stuff and I heard the gentleman say, before the police came, say it looked like they threw an unconscious person in the water, which was shocking,” said Mark Lugiano. “I mean who does that?"
Once crews got the woman out of the water, she was taken to the hospital where she died.
Taylor currently faces aggravated assault, simple assault, and reckless endangerment charges.
