Sunbury Gets on Board – ‘Sunburyopoly’ Helps Hose Company

SUNBURY -- At first glance, it looks like any other Monopoly game, but it's not. It's called "Sunburyopoly," and it's a limited-edition game that is all about this city in Northumberland County.

Sunburyopoly is a fundraiser for the Goodwill Hose Company, a volunteer fire company in Sunbury.

Newswatch 16 stopped by the fire company in May when member Greg Pfleegor came up with the project. He and other firefighters asked businesses to sponsor spaces on the board for $225.

"Some of them were like, 'It's a pretty decent idea,' and some of them said no. It's part of history, and thanks to the mayor helping us and a lot of other businesses helping get the board out, it turned out to be a pretty big hit," Pfleegor said.

500 game boards were made. The game came out this week and so far about half of them sold. Pfleegor says all of the money goes to the fire company for maintenance and vehicle expenses.

"It's a pretty big help for us because the grants are starting to get limited and we're just not getting the money we used to get in," Pfleegor said.

"I think it's a great thing for the community. I was glad to see them taking the initiative to do something that both promotes the community and raises funds for the firefighters," Meghan Beck said.

The game wouldn't have been possible without the help of some businesses in the Sunbury community, including the Hotel Edison on Market Street.

"It was a really cute promotion and to be able to get all the community members on this game board and promote all the little businesses in town," Beck said.

"It helped us and it helped them and now they get to advertise and maybe they'll play with their families now, who knows?" Pfleegor said.

If you'd like to buy one of the games, stop by the Goodwill Hose Company on Reagan Street in Sunbury, or call 570-286-2831.
