MIFFLINBURG — Folks in one part of Union County are enjoying a boom in the economy as several new businesses recently opened.

A group of ladies enjoyed some goodies inside one of Mifflinburg’s newest businesses, Gable House Bakery. The bakery and coffee house on Chestnut Street is owned by Nikki Walter. It opened last month.

“It’s been incredibly overwhelming,” said Walter. “Almost everybody who walks in here seems to say we needed something like this.”

Gable House Bakery is not the only business to open recently in Mifflinburg.

“The past year has seen a lot of new businesses coming to town and the outsides of town, which is terrific,” said Mifflinburg Main Street manager Cherie Ross.

Ross says besides the bakery, in the past two months Rishel’s Meats reopened, and Domino’s Pizza opened.

“National chains do serious, serious homework before they decide where they’re going to open a store,” said Ross.

In addition to those places, another business recently opened up here — Mifflinburg’s branch of the YMCA.

“We’ve also had in the last year, the Rusty Rail open, a barber shop downtown opened, Taste Craft Market opened, Buffalo Valley Gunsmithing opened,” added Ross.

The people we spoke with are excited about the community growing and improving.

“I’m excited for this little town to have some businesses like this. I’m excited for the bakery and now the pizza shop and also the meat shop,” said Ruth Styers.
