SELINSGROVE-- Steve Weidlich is a standout on the basketball court.
"He's a dynamite student, 3.8 GPA, very involved in the community. He's going to finish as one of the school's all-time leading scorers," Coach Frank Marcinek said.
But Weidlich is also a standout off the court. He and two other college students from our area are in the running for the 2017 Allstate NABC Good Works team award. It recognizes community service in men's college basketball.
Although Weidlich goes to school in Selinsgrove, he is from New Jersey. He wanted to get involved in the community, so he got involved with a church as soon as he got to Susquehanna.
"Every Wednesday, I go to a local church, the Selinsgrove Center, for people who are institutionalized or not allowed out in the public and I help take them around. Help take them to Mass and sit with them," Weidlich said.
Weidlich is majoring in Business Administration at Susquehanna. He also volunteers in a soup kitchen and led his team to organize a food drive with the Sunbury Salvation Army.
Steve's community service became personal back in may when he found out his coach had cancer.
"I was thinking to myself, how are we going to keep the tradition going, of every fall, doing something and I thought what better way than to sell bracelets to raise awareness for coach," Weidlich said.
Coach Frank Marcinek was diagnosed with throat cancer, but as of last week, is cancer free.
"It was meaningful to me, but it kind of took another swing at cancer and another type of cancer," Marcinek said.
Out of almost 200 nominees, 10 winners from across the country will be announced in February.
