Crocheting for a Cause

NEW MILFORD TOWNSHIP -- The spirit of the season is alive at The Summit Restaurant and Bar near New Milford in Susquehanna County.

"I think what makes this place great is the people behind it. They have the greatest heart and soul,” said Kelly Van Auken.

"It's nice to see somebody doing something good," said Colleen Bush.

Inside the restaurant, angel ornaments hang on a Christmas tree. They are on sale for $2 each.

Colleen Bush works at The Summit and came up with the idea to make and sell the ornaments.

“I think about all the positive. I think about where the money's going to go and how it can benefit,” she said while crocheting a pink angel.

All the money from the ornaments will go to the Ronald McDonald House near the Janet Weis Children's Hospital at Geisinger Medical Center near Danville.

"In 2001, my daughter was born at the Janet Weis Children's Hospital in Danville and she was placed in a neonatal intensive care unit with multiple, multiple medical problems and I needed a place to stay,” she said.

Bush was so grateful for the experience and the support at the Ronald McDonald House.

Unfortunately, her daughter passed away.

Bush's husband is the chef at The Summit Restaurant.

"Everybody here has been behind it 110 percent and everybody in the community has been really, really behind it,” he said.

Already, more than 50 ornaments have been sold. Bush, who taught herself to crochet, is hoping to make and sell 400 before Christmas.

Her co-workers support her.

"She's got the biggest heart of gold. She gives to everybody here. She gives of her time, of her soul. She is a very selfless individual,” said Van Auken.

Colleen Bush says she's happy to do what she can, in memory of her daughter.

"I think she lives on in me and I think I do it not only for her but for the other children as well."
