Williamsport Area Student Killed in Wreck in Lycoming Township

LYCOMING TOWNSHIP -- A high school student was killed in a crash in Lycoming County Tuesday morning.

It happened around 10:30 a.m. on Route 973 in Lycoming Township, near Cogan Station.

Investigators said a 17-year-old girl driving a car was killed when she crossed the center line and crashed into a pickup truck.

The driver of the pickup was not hurt.

Authorities said the victim was a student at Williamsport Area High School.

The school's superintendent released a statement, saying: 'We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of one of our students today. We extend our condolences to the family during this extremely difficult time."

Grief counselors will be on hand for students and faculty on Wednesday.

Route 973 was closed for a time but has reopened.
