LEWISBURG -- Many business owners are looking forward to "Small Business Saturday." One community in Union County takes that day very seriously.

"Shop Local" is the theme of the weekend in Lewisburg and Barbara Allison agrees with that motto.

"Instead of spending money in a mall, I think we need to support the people in the towns," said Allison.

While the stores in downtown Lewisburg had their fair share of Black Friday shoppers, the real draw is "Small Business Saturday."

"It's not that crowded, it's more relaxing, and you get to talk to the sales people as well as other people without being rushed," said Joyce Olson of Shamokin Dam.

"We just like going to the small businesses," said Debbie Van Horn of Hughesville. "You don't have the big crowds and they just have unique stuff that you don't see at the malls."

The majority of the stores in downtown Lewisburg banded together and have shopping passes for 15 percent off a single item for Black Friday and Small Business Saturday. Some of the other stores have additional specials for Small Business Saturday.

"The money that is spent locally will stay local. I have all people that live locally that I'm employing," said Connie Harter, owner of Retrah.

Lewisburg's Small Business Saturday is part of its "Miracle on Market Street" promotion that runs through Christmas Eve. The promotion encourages people to shop local and slow down and enjoy the holiday.
