FRACKVILLE  -- An early Christmas present for folks living in or traveling to a community in Schuylkill County: free parking through the holiday season.

No one likes parking at a meter and getting a parking ticket. This holiday season if you shopping or traveling through Frackville, you won't have to worry about that.

Karen Domalakes is on the Frackville borough council. She was part of the vote to give people in this community a holiday gift. It's one they have been giving for the past couple of years, making all parking meters in Frackville free for the holiday season.

This year, it started on Monday and goes through January 2.

"I think that is very nice of Frackville, not everyone can afford the meters," said resident Linda Arnold.

The borough has never actually quantified how much money it loses by making these meters free during the holiday season. It just hopes the money people save from this gesture, is paid forward, especially to small businesses in the area."

"You might not realize how many things that you have downtown," said Domalakes. "There are 40 businesses on these two blocks when you count the banks and the places you can eat."

People like Jonathan Troyer say the free parking does encourage him to shop at the mom and pop shops along Lehigh Street and it gives him a little extra change to spend.

"That is where our economy is at," Troyer said. "I firmly believe in small businesses, so absolutely! Anything you can do to help the small business!"

This holiday gift of free parking may be spreading. In at least one other borough in Schuylkill County, you won't have to feed the meters.

Starting Wednesday until the day after New Year's, Schuylkill Haven will also have free downtown parking.
