SOUTH ABINGTON TOWNSHIP -- Fire crews had their work cut out for them when a brush fire torched acres in Lackawanna County on Saturday.

More than 100 firefighters fought the flames near Dickson City in an area commonly referred to as "the notch" that's along Routes 6 and 11 south of Clarks Summit.

Crews had to cover lots of ground with smaller equipment after the fire spread due to the heavy winds.

"The biggest asset on a fire this big is manpower. We had off-road ATVs that we could not access the fire from, so it was a lot of hiking on foot with tanks on your back and a rake in your hand," said Asst. Chief P.J. Hughes, Chinchilla Hose Co.

Officials say it appears campfires on rock ledges in the area caused the brush fire.

No one was hurt and no buildings were damaged.
