PLAINS TOWNSHIP -- A wreath dedicated to veterans was displayed at the annual Veterans Day ceremony at the VA medical center near Wilkes-Barre.
Dozens of veterans from across the Wyoming Valley came here to be a part of the ceremony.
"It's a great opportunity for us to recognize the sacrifices that our veterans have made," said medical center director Russell Lloyd.
Robert Ball of Kingston remembers a sacrifice he made when he served in the army in Korea.
"I got wounded by a hand grenade, got a piece of shrapnel in my right eye," said Ball.
The metal has since been removed, his eye healed, and it's his fellow Americans recognizing his effort and that of other vets, that makes fighting for their country worth the sacrifice.
"I really appreciate it, I'll tell you, you can't realize it. It was 66 years ago I did that, you know?" said Ball.
"This means everything to me," said Army veteran Bob Sullivan. "When the country comes together and acknowledges us as veterans, it gives us such a satisfying feeling because we did put our lives on the line to defend this flag and this country."
The Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center's new director, who just started a month ago, promises to keep up the quality care here for those who served our country.
"We do that well here in Wilkes-Barre, but there's always opportunity for improvement, so I'm looking forward to working with the team and doing everything we can for our veterans," Lloyd said.
The ceremony ended with four color guards, each lifting an American flag that had been on display and taking them away.
