BENTON -- What happens when a PG-13 reporter covers an R-rated election?

Most reporters on the election trail have been around politics for a while but there is a new kid on the block from Columbia County.

Erik Weibel may look young and that's because he is. He's 14 years old but this teenager from Columbia County has already experienced more politics than many reporters around the country.

The freshman at Benton Area High School won an essay contest through Scholastic to become a kid reporter, one of only 35 in the country.

Since Pennsylvania is such an important state in this year's presidential election, Erik has been to his fair share of events. He even covered Donald Trump's previous campaign stop near Wilkes-Barre.

"It's just amazing," Erik said. "I'm very grateful to Scholastic that I have been able to go to these."

But some of this year's election's content is not meant for the ears of kids. Even so, Erik asked the tough questions at the Trump rally.

"(I asked) why they're still supporting a candidate who said these things about women."

He's interviewed adults but prefers talking to kids.

"Honestly, that was one of the most heartwarming parts because most of the kids I interviewed, they knew exactly why they wanted to support Ms. Clinton or Mr. Trump."

Teachers at Benton Area are proud of him and history teacher Christy Gengler even discussed him in class.

"We've highlighted Erik on several occasions so the students are aware of what he's doing and updating them on his accomplishments," Gengler said.

And Erik's not done covering the election yet. He's going to be out and about at polling places at Election Day interviewing people.
