KINGSTON -- People lined the streets in one part of Luzerne County for the 70th annual Wyoming Valley Veterans Day Parade, honoring the men and women who served our country.

Planes flew overhead and a sea of flags waved in support of our military.

The Wyoming Valley Veterans Day Parade featuring military, police, and firefighters kicked off in style. People came out in the chilly weather on Sunday to honor those who gave so much.

“We come every year. We just like to honor the soldiers and everybody,” said Lois Chiogna of Kingston.

This year's theme celebrated past, present, and future women in the military.

Organizers brought high ranking Naval officers to serve as the parade marshal and the parade reviewing officer.

Linda Wackerman spent 30 years in the U.S. Navy and was one of the first women to fly helicopters off of carriers.

“It’s just neat to watch our list of people as well as our officers and all services be able to be treated as equals, go to the front lines and provide not only support, but combat,” said Wackerman.

The parade began in Kingston and made its way through Public Square before reaching the F.M. Kirby Center in Wilkes-Barre. Many people lined the streets just to say thank you to the men and women in uniform.

Some people brought their children and grandchildren to teach an important lesson of freedom through service.

“Just to see the history of our past hopefully it won’t be the future. I am a Vietnam veteran and it’s just a nice thing for the kids to see something like this,” said Steven Krysiewski.

This year, the Navy was in charge of the parade. Next year, the Army will command the ranks.
