CANAAN TOWNSHIP -- Work is expected to wrap up this week on a bridge in Wayne County.

Crews are repairing the bridge on Davis Road, just off Route 6 near Waymart.

A weight limit was put on the bridge this past summer and heavy trucks were not allowed on the span due to deterioration.

No one's driving across this bridge near Waymart while crews take out the severely rusted sections to replace them.

The township bridge is the only way in or out for folks who live on Davis Road. Until these emergency repairs are done, the bridge was limited to just three tons.

"It kind of got forgotten about," said resident Robin Dirisa. "This is a bridge that for 10 years it's been depleting. So finally, I guess the squeaky wheel gets the oil."

Since the lower weight restriction started in August, the Dirosa family pushed for Canaan Township officials to do something in order to make the bridge safer for heavier loads including UPS trucks and fuel deliveries.

"They dropped off two tanks instead of sending a tanker over to fill the one tank. That will get us by until the weight restriction gets lifted," said Frank Dirosa.

"This winter we'll be able to get a plow truck, be able to get fuel, back and forth for food and not be stuck up here with nothing," added resident Cassandra Sosa.

John Kornbau worried about what would happen if there was an emergency at one of the 10 homes. Fire trucks and ambulances would have been too heavy to cross the bridge, but this $15,000 repair job should increase the limit to 22 tons immediately.

"Most everybody else is in trouble if something happens," said Kornbau. "Glad this is happening. It's been a long time coming.

Construction crews are planning to have this work done within a day, fixing the bridge so heavier trucks can go across the bridge onto Davis Road. In the spring, a new bridge is on its way, putting a lot of minds at ease.
