LEHMAN TOWNSHIP -- A community in Luzerne County may have just started a new tradition for Halloween.

Folks gathered in the Back Mountain for a night of trick or treating at the Luzerne County Fairgrounds.

Even before the sugar rush set in, the youngsters who came out for Halloween were already fired up, ready for a night of fun in Luzerne County, collecting as much candy as their bags could hold.

“Oh I love trick or treating!” said 10-year-old Cameron Hugdins from Trucksville.

“I'm Sharknado from the Syfy movie ‘Sharknado’ and I really like this costume,” said Colin Mikolaichik from Harveys Lake.

Hundreds of people came out to the Luzerne County Fairgrounds for the Back Mountain Trick or Treat Neighborhood event as volunteer vendors set up booths to create a simulated neighborhood feel.

It's the first year the community is doing this at the fairgrounds.

Rhonda Spencer and her friends came up with the idea which took off like a wicked witch on a broom.

“We decided with everything going on in the world today, let's do something safe and it started out small and this is where we ended up,” said Spencer.

Organizers got in touch with fairgrounds officials who immediately said they were on board to provide the location.

“And it really was just a no-brainer to give a safe place for kids to go trick or treat and having a good time,” said Fairgrounds board member Brenda Pugh. “And we have a DJ that's going to play and we have hot apple cider donated and it just took off from there.”

“It's a wonderful event for the kids to get everybody together and it's safe for them to trick or treat and have fun and just not be worried about anything,” said Kristy Ann Newhart from Harveys Lake.

“It's so nice to see that they have a safe place to do it and so many groups participating today,” said Colleen Phillips from Dallas. “The line to get in is just incredible.”

“I thought they did a good job. It's really nice, “said trick or treater Emma Fielding from Lehman Township.

“Yes, very good job for their first year,” said Hugdins.

Organizers say based on the success of this event, they fully expect to be doing this again next Halloween.
