HILLSGROVE TOWNSHIP -- Things are slowly getting back to normal for one community in Sullivan County ravaged by flooding. The community came together to give kids their own Halloween.
A week ago, water was flowing over Route 87 in the Hillsgrove area after the area was hit hard by flooding that even washed away several homes. Now, the cleanup continues in this part of Sullivan County.
As people continue the long slow process of salvaging what's left, Route 87 remains closed.
Down the road from all the destruction is a parking lot filled with pirates, a living skeleton, and even Tigger! This "Trunk or Treat" is all to give kids in the area a chance to celebrate Halloween, even if it's not safe to walk around and trick or treat.
"It feels good to be able to get your Halloween candy," said Kaelyn Wettlaufer.
"It’s pretty important because it's fun to go out and get dressed and see everyone else's costumes," said Marty Zeigler.
Normally in the Hillsgrove area, trick or treating starts at the volunteer fire company where kids have a party before they go door to door. But because of flooding and the safety concerns with debris still all over the area, community leaders said they had to do something else.
Carol MacElhaney is the president of the Hillsgrove Community Club.
"The kids were really disappointed they couldn't go trick or treating with everything that happened in town, so they’re having fun. Everyone is bringing treats and it's Halloween!" MacElhaney said.
People are thankful the event gives kids a chance to laugh and just spend an evening being a kid.
