SCRANTON -- A Halloween celebration was held at the Marketplace at Steamtown in Scranton Thursday night.

Hundreds of witches, princesses, superheroes, and more trick or treated at various stores.

"You know, it's a safe way to take your kids out, and it's a lot better than going out in the rain,” said Jessica Feliciano of Scranton.

In recent years, events like this "Malloween" have become more popular as alternatives to traditional trick or treating, but why? Parents said it's all about safety.

"You're not going door-to-door where you're not knowing people or what you're getting, so I'm glad they're having it this year,” said Leigh Fedorchak of Olyphant.

"When I was younger, it was you went house to house, but it's a different world today,” said Mark Von Bergen of Jessup.

In addition to the fact that people think "Malloween" is safer, they also say it’s weather-proof. It's inside so they don't have to worry about the rain or cold.

"We were actually supposed to be going to a trunk or treat elsewhere and it was canceled, so I think this is a fabulous event for the kids,” said Kelly Von Bergen of Jessup.
