LEHIGHTON -- Seventh Street near Grove Park in Lehighton is where many children like Tiffany Hermen's young son go to play, but some recent speeding on this street is raising concern and residents here hope to get that problem fixed.

"It's very bad. A bunch of teenagers they will come flying down here and if we ask them nicely to stop sometimes they do it out of spite," said Hermen.

Posted up and down the street, 15 mph signs are visible to drivers.  So are speed trap lines. Still, the problem of speeding is becoming worse and residents are frustrated.

"They just come flying down. The speed limit is 15 and they don't seem to care, the kids. We have called and complained about it but there is only so much they can do," said Theresa Chapman, Lehighton.

Residents here tell us drivers speed through this area all throughout the day but it really starts to pick up after school lets out.  It's a safety concern for people because many children live in this area and play right here at the park.

Chapman has two young children who like to play outside. She suggested some solutions including speed bumps to help slow drivers down.

"It's an issue, a big ongoing issue going on over here," said Chapman.

Since the crackdown started, police have stopped several drivers going over the limit.

Lehighton police tell Newswatch 16 they hear residents concerns and are doing all they can to fix the issue.

"Because of the amount of calls we are getting we have increased patrols. We have a mandatory patrol that goes out for our afternoon shift and our evening shift," said Matt Arner, Lehighton Police Department.

Authorities are encouraging residents to take down license plate numbers and descriptions of vehicles that are speeding and report it to police.
