PRESTON TOWNSHIP -- The first dose of wintry weather is on tap for parts of our area Thursday.

In Bethany, north of Honesdale, it's still green grass but by morning, certain spots north of here could see a couple inches of snow.

Chilling winds blew through this part of northern Wayne County on this October day. It was so frigid that Cold Spring is living up to its name and now, there's snow in the forecast.

"You get ready for it ahead of time and you have no big deal," said Alice Brown. "When snow's coming, look out window and say, 'I don't have to go out there anymore.'"

Most years, folks in these parts say kids have to wear snowsuits under their costumes while Trick or Treating, and this year may not be an exception.

Lynne Russell has been delivering mail along this route for nearly 30 years and has to resort to extra layers with the freezing weather setting in already.

"I bundle up and make sure I have a blanket, another jacket, gloves in the car and boots with traction, very important," said Russell.

This is the potential for the first taste of winter weather in northern Wayne County, so Preston Township officials have their equipment ready so they can clear roads to help get students and teachers to school in the morning, even if there ends up being a school delay.

"We were oiling up cinder spreaders and bringing plows out of the barn because we have them buried," said township supervisor Alan Jones.

The township has all its cinders left over from last year and will be ready to handle whatever Mother Nature throws at this community near Lake Como.

"The first snow is sometimes the hardest snow," Jones added. "The ground is not frozen solid, trucks are heavy."

Some will quite literally take the snow in stride getting out for brisk walks no matter the weather.

"I have lived here all my life, born and raised and winters aren't what they used to be," said Marium Llewellyn. "We've usually had snow by now."
