BRIDGEWATER TOWNSHIP -- People gathered in Susquehanna County Saturday night to learn more about the process behind a proposed incinerator.

Inside the auditorium at Montrose Area Junior/Senior High School, several dozen people gathered to learn more about what could happen if a waste incinerator is built.

This talk, put on by the League of Women Voters of Susquehanna County, focused on the details of a potential public health study that would come before any approval.

"Give people a little bit of background about what people will be talking about because there will be technical aspects going on, and the more people who know, the better informed they can be in terms of making decisions and supporting one side or another," said Dr. Michael McCawley, public health service officer.

Back in June, we first learned about a proposed industrial park and waste incinerator near the Gibson exit on Interstate 81. The company that wants to build it, Tyler Corners, secured the land with plans to develop it and use natural gas to burn waste products.

Marianna Crimmins-Murdock of Silver Lake Township is trying to learn all she can about the process as it is becoming a big issue in the county.

"I think it's going to become a big one. You're already seeing a bunch of signs on the dirt roads. People are aware it's a possibility, and people aren't sure they want it here," she said

"I have children and grandchildren, and it'll affect their health,” said Mary Ellen McCarey of New Milford.

Newswatch 16 spoke with Tyler Corners, who declined to comment on this presentation.

Tyler Corners still needs several permits at the local, state, and federal level before it could be built. A planning report suggests that construction could start as early as 2018 if the incinerator project is approved.
