TAMAQUA -- Two old cabooses in Schuylkill County are getting a new look, thanks to some volunteers.

It was a perfect day Friday to paint a caboose in Schuylkill County.

"I like walking with my kids past it, and looking at it," said Michelle Wagner. "Not seeing graffiti will be wonderful."

The two old cabooses sit behind the Tamaqua train station. It's owned by a community group that wanted help to fix up the area. Volunteers hoped to get the painting done in time for the Tamaqua Heritage Festival this past Sunday, but the weather didn't cooperate. However, on this day the sun was shining.

Andy Leibenguth is a disabled veteran with PTSD. He explains that for the past decade, organizing volunteers has given his life direction.

"The painting is forever," Leibenguth said. "When you paint, you make things look beautiful, that is why we do it."

Volunteers say the best part of this project is you can see the results right away.

"A lot of our projects you don't see the end result, you feel good but you don't see the end result. This one, you are actually going to see it," Leibenguth said.

People we spoke with nearby are glad to see the hulks of history transformed.

"Just to spruce it up, it's nice," said Maryellen Chodur.

And long after the paint is dry, these volunteers will be able to see the difference they made.
