SCRANTON -- Scranton Prep is mourning the loss of a former teacher and coach.
Tony Cantafio, known by friends and students as "Taps," died Monday after a horrific accident during a football game ten days ago.
Cantafio taught math at Scranton Prep for decades before retiring in 2015. He still worked as the football team statistician and scorekeeper.
A football player collided with him on the sidelines on September 30.
According to the Lackawanna County Coroner, Cantafio died due to a traumatic brain injury from the fall. He was 67 years old.
Counselors are expected to be on-hand for students at Scranton Prep on Tuesday.
"Scranton Prep is deeply saddened by the loss of Tony Cantafio. Tony was a beloved friend, teacher, and coach for 31 years at Scranton Prep. A constant figure on the football sidelines, in the baseball dugout, and at the basketball scoring table, he was a loyal companion for the many teachers and coaches who had the pleasure of working with him. He was a man whose love for the young people of Prep was second only to his love for his family. He will be deeply missed by the Prep family. Prep is grateful to God for the life of this good man and grateful to his wife Joanne, and sons Chris and Tony, who shared him with us for over three decades.”
