MUNCY -- A group in Lycoming County wants to stop a large waste management company from moving into their neighborhood.
Earlier this year, people living in Muncy first found out that the owner of an empty factory building in their borough reached out to Delta Thermo Energy, a waste management company based out of Philadelphia, hoping the business would want to buy the space.
The idea of a garbage burner in Muncy isn't sitting well with residents.
From her home, Crystal Millard can see the broken windows and posted signs on the giant empty factory in Muncy.
"I see a lot of possibility and a lot of worry,” Millard said.
Back in July, Millard found out the factory may be bought by Delta Thermo Energy.
“They want to take the garbage in and they would burn it at ultra-high temperatures, reduce it to ash, and it would let off steam or electricity into the air," said Millard.
Millard was there when employees from the waste management company came to Muncy to share their plans for the project.
"We were told at one point that there would be up to three days worth of garbage on site to ensure that they would have continual supply of garbage. You can't store three hundred tons of garbage and not have it smell," Millard added.
According to the company's website, the green waste-to-energy facility helps create jobs and is environmentally safe.
Millard's not convinced.
"We invested money. We've invested our time and energy into this town, and I can't believe there is nothing we can do or say to make it stop,” said Millard.
Millard created a Facebook page to gain support. The page has nearly 1,400 members. Some of the people tell us they learned about the plans through social media.
"I sat down and read about it and was like, ‘Oh yeah, I'm totally in with that, trying to stop it,’" said Elisabeth Reichard of Muncy Township.
Dozens like Reichard planned to bring their concerns to the Muncy borough council at its meeting Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
"Well, we are hoping that they can work with us to try to find some way to prevent it from coming in,” Millard said.
