WILKES-BARRE TOWNSHIP -- If you're looking for some extra holiday cash, several stores in the Wyoming Valley Mall are planning to add hundreds of seasonal jobs, like J.C. Penney, which plans to bring on at least 30 more people.
“After Labor Day, we go into holiday hiring mindset mode,” said Kurt Slusser, the general manager at J.C. Penney, adding he needs to hire cashiers, selling associates, stockers, and more.
“Come in early because a lot of times, some of these better positions, they go fast,” he said.
Some people were surprised to hear the word "holiday" this early.
“It's a little too early for Christmas because right now you're trying to get other things! Done, you're just getting over summer,” said one man.
But job recruiters say it's never too early to start looking for a seasonal job. And they also offered some tips if you're looking to make that job a permanent one.
“Anybody can help you get a job, but it's up to you to keep that position, so again, doing your best to establish yourself, be friendly and approachable, and establish some repertoire with the company,” said a manager from One Staff Sourcing.
That's why some students, like King's College freshman Katherine Pugh, want to find a seasonal job related to their major.
“I think it's a great opportunity for students to get their foot in the door,” she said.
Next Tuesday, the Wyoming Valley mall near Wilkes-Barre will be holding a job fair. Employers from stores inside the mall, plus businesses not in the mall are expected to be there.
