Good Samaritan Wounded, Attacker Killed as Mother and Baby Rescued at Walmart

Were it not for two Good Samaritans who risked their lives, a Kansas City mother and her baby may not have survived an attack in a Walmart parking lot. And most likely, neither would they.

It happened in Shawnee, Kansas, over the weekend, police told CNN.

Two men attacked the 39-year-old mother as she was putting her baby in a car seat. They struck her in the back of her head, said Shawnee police Maj. Dan Tennis.

Hearing the mother's screams, the Good Samaritans rushed to help.

One was shot -- multiple times -- when one of the attackers, later identified as John W. Simmons III, pulled out a gun.

The second rescuer had a gun of his own and he fired back, killing Simmons, police said.

The baby wasn't hurt.

Police later caught the second suspect, 27-year-old Arthur Fred Wyatt III.

On Tuesday, Wyatt was charged with attempted first-degree murder charges, aggravated kidnapping and attempted aggravated robbery.

The wounded Good Samaritan is a 33-year-old Kansas City, Missouri, man. He remains hospitalized.

The mother has been released from the hospital and reunited with her baby.

The second Good Samaritan, a 36-year-old De Soto, Kansas, man, was interviewed by police and released. He won't face charges.

The mother didn't know the suspects.

So, the good Samaritan won’t face charges? Was there any thought that he should?? Someone tries to be a good person and American, and people think he did something wrong. There is seriously something wrong with people if that is the case. My only complaint is he didn’t kill the second guy! Maybe the State should and stick a needle in Mr. Wyatt, next week!!

Believe it or not, there are gun laws in the United States. Gun nuts insist we don’t need more laws as much as we need to enforce the ones we already have. This was just an example of law enforcement doing their jobs, making sure the Good Samaritan in question was a legal gun owner.

But there’s simply no pleasing you people. You “patriots” always have to find something to gripe about, especially when it comes to cops. Carry on.

Really ? Not pleasing us? You call anyone with a firearm a gun nut…If it would not be for that gun nut a kid would be gone and maybe two people dead… You gun grabbers just don’t get it do ya.

        @ Warrin’

Never said I was a “gun grabber” but that was a nice attempt to distort the truth, which is typical of you people. I’m a responsible gun owner but I also believe in following the law. Apparently the gun-toting Good Samaritan in the article is, too, or he’d be up on charges.

I have to wonder whose side you’re on, Warrin’, and what you’re so frightened of. Thanks for reinforcing that gun-nut stereotype, though.
