WILKES-BARRE -- A local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution honored a famous--or perhaps infamous--singer from Wilkes-Barre.
The DAR celebrated the life of Florence Foster Jenkins and her mother at their grave sites in the Hollenback Cemetery on North River Street on Saturday.
A movie about Jenkins was recently released, starring Meryl Streep.
The film is about how the woman from Wilkes-Barre was known in New York City music circles for her off-key singing and being blissfully ignorant of her critics.
Jenkins and her mother were celebrated because her family roots can be traced to Revolutionary War patriots.
“It’s history. We have such a rich history in this area and people enjoy it and it should be remembered,” said Kathleen Smith, Daughters of the American Revolution.
Meryl Streep was invited to the ceremony, but a representative for the actress said she had prior commitments and could not make it.
