SCRANTON -- North American Manufacturing on Barring Avenue in Scranton makes American flags among other things. No task is too big.
At least that's what owner Joe Shea thought when he saw a world-record sized flag flying New York City last year.
"And since we make flags here at North American, I looked at that and said, 'Hey, we could make a flag that big!' So that's what we did," he said.
Shea makes it sound easy, but his crew has put in six months of work making the gigantic flag. The dimensions are important: 60 feet and six inches by 90 feet and six inches.
North American Manufacturing plans to beat the current world-record for largest free-flying flag by six inches.
The plan is to hang the flag next to the North Scranton Expressway. To do so, they will need two cranes because the flag weighs about 400 pounds.
Employees still need to add the thirteenth stripe, which will be satisfying for Debbie Wademan. She typically makes flags that are 4 feet by 7 feet.
"I was very impressed. Well actually, to be honest, I laughed at first just because, you know? But once we started doing it, I was very impressed. I love it! I can't wait until it's done," Wademan said.
Fifty stars, thirteen stripes, 463 yards of fabric that its makers say will be on display later this month.
