SAYLORSBURG -- Flames destroyed a barn in Monroe County Tuesday.

Video from Jim Capasso shows flames pouring from a barn near Saylorsburg.

Fire crews responded to the blaze just after noon.

"I heard, 'Pop, pop.' And then it got quiet and then I heard trucks," recalled Debbie Searfoss.

"She comes banging on the window, 'Come here, come here,' and I ran out the front door and she said, 'The neighbor's barn is on fire,'" added Sandra Bubba.

Fire crews lined Flyte Road and blocked traffic while they fought the flames, put out hot spots, and tore down what was left.

According to Blue Ridge Assistant Fire Chief Paul Warnick, putting out the fire was only one challenge that crews faced.

"Any time a fire starts during the middle of the day, it's always harder because we are all volunteer fire departments and most of the guys are at work," Warnick said.

"It's tough everywhere during the day," added Jackson Township Assistant Chief Keith Elliot. "We don't have enough guys and we leave work to come out and help additional, other fire companies in the area."

Getting enough firefighters here to put out the fire is just one battle. Another is getting water to the area, especially in a rural area like this where there are no fire hydrants.

Elliot had to shut down his business and bring equipment to the fire.

"They needed two tankers, so one of our other tanker drivers left his job and grabbed his tanker, I left my job and grabbed my tanker and here we are."

Officials do not know how or where in the barn the fire started. The only items inside were old cars and old farm equipment .

The fire is not considered suspicious.
