New Hotel Planned in Best Western’s Place in Dunmore

DUNMORE -- A closed hotel set to reopen is not delighting other hotel owners in the area; they say they already face too much competition.

What used to be a Best Western hotel is now being renovated. A developer based in New Jersey plans to reopen this as a hotel.

It was two years ago when Best Western guests were rolled out on stretchers from the hotel in Dunmore. The place was evacuated after a carbon monoxide leak. Some guests spent that night in the hospital.

The hotel near the entrance to the interstates in Dunmore is now ripped down to the studs.

According to Dunmore borough officials, the place was purchased by a company in New Jersey. Plans are to reopen it as a hotel. It's spurred speculation from people in the borough and fear from other hotel owners.

A quick poll of hotel managers in Dunmore, Scranton, and Moosic shows that in the hotel business these days more competition is not a good thing.

"There's way too many (hotels)," said Lois Anne Graham. "Every year, another one opens up, basically, and more are in the pipeline now, so really, we don't have enough business to continue to support them."

Graham manages the Courtyard Marriott in Moosic. She says the past year has been difficult for them and most other hotels in the area. There's been an increase in competition and a sharp decrease in customers.

"I think everyone thinks this is a booming market, which it was about five, six years ago when we had so much oil and gas. I think people thought that they would continue to see this in our area, and unfortunately, we all know that they're not in the area anymore."

There is no word from the new owners about plans for the hotel in Dunmore.
