BERWICK -- Crews are wrapping up construction at the new West Berwick Elementary School on Washington Street.

The $23 million school will replace Orange Street Elementary, which was built in 1932 and 14th Street Elementary, which was built in 1924.

"We can do a lot more small activities and partner work," said fourth grade teacher Megan Culver. "We just have the space for the kids to really spread out this year so I'm really excited about that."

"All the pieces of a modern education we'll now be able to provide to the kids," said Supt. Wayne Brookhart. "The old buildings were great and had historical value but were built in the depression era and certainly had seen better days and it was time to move on."

The classrooms are almost ready to go, but places like the gymnasium along with the library still have a lot of work left to be done. Builders are optimistic that they'll at least be able to get the gym done by the first day of school.

The first day of school is September 6, but a grand opening is scheduled for this Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
