WILKES-BARRE TOWNSHIP -- UGI began a week-long repaving project Monday in Luzerne County, causing some traffic backup in the Wilkes-Barre area and affecting some businesses.

Crews from UGI are repaving part of Wilkes-Barre Township Boulevard near Coal Street after replacing gas lines underground a few months ago. But all the cones in this very busy intersection have some drivers confused and traffic tangled.

"People don't know where they can turn in. It's hard to find out where the driveways are and everything," said the manager at one business.

Businesses near the road work, like one vape shop, are bracing for a hit.

"It pretty much cuts our business in half, easily."

But officials from UGI say the work is being completed as quickly as possible. They also call this road project an investment that's a part of a bigger plan.

"We're in the middle of a $1.2 billion replacement project, and every year, we replace a certain amount of pipe," explained UGI official Donald Brominski.

Drivers are looking forward to the repaving being finished, and for this road project to be in their review mirrors.

Crews should finish repaving this part of Wilkes-Barre Township Boulevard by Friday evening.
