SCRANTON -- Summer is winding down and kids in our area are gearing up to head back-to-school.

This includes the thousands of students ready to start a new phase of their lives as they head to college.

Newswatch 16 stopped by the University of Scranton Saturday afternoon as more than 1,000 freshmen moved into residence halls on campus.

Volunteers, otherwise known as 'purple people,' were on hand to help the students and their families.

These students are members of the future class of 2020 and say they couldn't be more excited to be here on campus.

"I like meeting new people and having new experiences, and I have a couple clubs that I'm considering joining,” said Morgan Murphy, a freshman.

"I love the community feel of it, and I love the PT program, so I thought it was a really good fit for me,” said Megan Fabian, a freshman in the physical therapy program.

The university also held a convocation ceremony Saturday afternoon to formally welcome its incoming students.

Classes start on Monday.
