SCRANTON -- Believe it or not, summer is nearing the end.

Students at the University of Scranton start classes on Monday and are in for a different look for one part of campus.

The students aren't back at the University of Scranton yet, but it's still plenty busy on campus as crews continue renovations to the university commons.

The renovations include expanding an intersection near Linden Street and converting it into a circular plaza.

"A larger area for students to gather, tables for them to sit at," said Stan Zygmunt, Director of News and Media Relations at Univeristy of Scranton. "There's also going to be a raised terrace with flagpoles."

"I think they look great, " commented junior Dawn Dorris. "I wish they got it done before the semester started. As long as you can walk between places, it'll be fine."

Jimena Pacheco is starting her senior year and looking to capitalize on the new space for as long as she can.

"I want to walk it. I don't want to see construction the entire semester. I just want to see it and use it too," Pacheco said.  "It's nice to have spaces to hang around with friends just to study, to spend a day. It's so sunny and nice right now. It's nice that students have a place to move around."

The university loses a little bit of its green space with the renovation of the commons, but what it loses, the university makes up as crews continue demolition of the old science hall.

The commons renovation is expected to be completed in about a week. The demolition of the old science hall should wrap up in the fall.
