JIM THORPE -- It's the 19th year St. John's Lutheran Church in Jim Thorpe has had a clothing giveaway but year after year a simple shirt on someone's back seems to still mean a lot.
"I come for everybody else instead of myself," said Joann Davenport.
Davenport is picking up clothes for her grandson, and some sweaters for her mother who's in a wheelchair. She even brought her teenage granddaughters to pick out some school clothes for themselves.
Davenport is like many, grateful for this clothing giveaway. She's so grateful that on her way out her family donates some money to the church, whatever they can afford.
"It helps everybody out, the less fortunate, I come here every year."
In the three hours since this clothing giveaway started, more than 100 people have come. One of the more popular items that people were picking up were children's clothing.
"We figured we'd check it out since they grow so quick," said Ashley Corson. Corson just moved to the area, and is a mother of three young children.
With children growing so quickly and new clothes being so expensive, this church's clothing giveaway is a god-send for her.
"I think it works out great, and it's definitely a good thing to do for the community," added Corson.
According to Leta Thompson, a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, it takes a lot of time and effort to do the event.
"We have a lot of people who help a lot of people who come and many many people who are grateful. I had so many people say thank you this morning," said Thompson.
The church is located on South Avenue in Jim Thorpe. The clothing giveaway continues every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday through August 20th.
Anyone is welcome to come, pick up whatever and as much as you need.
