SCRANTON -- There's a new partnership between Lackawanna College and Marywood University meant to help students better afford going to four years of college.

The presidents of both Lackawanna College and Marywood University agree that this decision will help students so they can go, flourish, and better afford college in today's world.

With the stroke of a pen, in the Marywood University rotunda, Lackawanna College and Marywood University presidents signed an academic partnership.

President of Lackawanna Mark Volk believes this will promote a healthy relationship between the two schools and a pipeline for students entering their third year of college.

"Being able to move student at the junior level to move seats that have been lost to students that have gone somewhere or have not been successful is a great opportunity for them as well," Volk said.

This agreement means students who attend Lackawanna College for two years can now transfer to Marywood University to continue their education.

Marywood University President Sr. Mary Perisco says this decision will make it easier for students because all of their 60 credits will transfer from Lackawanna College and all degrees are eligible.

"What an opportunity for the young people of our county to get the best possible quality education that they can and be able to tailor it to their financial capabilities," said Sr. Mary Persico.

Lackawanna College officials say this will eliminate barriers for students who want to come to Marywood, realizing students and parents are looking at the cost of college this move will helps students who can't afford or are not ready for a four year university

"Costs are probably the largest barrier to our students for many students in our area."

Rebecca Lukasak is a senior studying bio-technology at Marywood University. She's seen friends and other students leave Marywood so having this influx of students might not be a bad idea.

"I think it's a great idea. It's always good to have more students around campus. Every college campus is different so … being exposed to a different environment can even be beneficial for them," said Lukasak.

This agreement goes into effect right away.

Marywood University and Lackawanna College believe that this agreement will help both colleges make an impact around Lackawanna County.
