WILKES-BARRE -- There was plenty of barbecue smoke and a hungry crowd on Public Square in Wilkes-Barre.

Folks lined up for a chicken barbecue Sunday. It was all to raise money to get K-9 officers for the Wilkes-Barre Police Department.

Chicken dinners were only $5.

Food and supplies were donated by individuals and local businesses.

The event was organized by Charlotte Raup, the president of Wilkes-Barre Crime Watch.

“I am looking at a lot of people who came down to support the K-9s. You know, it's so useful in the whole city, so we are really happy about that,” said Raup.

The hope is by having police dogs, officers can help keep the community safer.

Organizers said they sold all 300 chicken dinners in two hours and even had to turn some people away.

In all, they raised more than $2,000 for the K-9 program.
