HONESDALE—Police in Honesdale are investigating after two toddlers were found in a roadway Thursday morning. Investigators said the two-year old and three-year old boys were at the intersection of Park and Church Streets when a motorist spotted them around 9:45 a.m. and pulled them to safety.

“It’s shocking, I can’t believe that this would happen and two little boys would just wander that far with parents not having any idea. It’s upsetting, especially in our little town,” said Nicole Branning of Honesdale, who lives close to the intersection.

“I’m glad that somebody pulled them out of the way so a car didn’t hit them,” said Aviana Branning.

The toddlers were taken to Wayne Memorial to be checked out and police began canvassing the area for the children’s parents.

“I was home, I got a knock on the door from the state police saying that they found two little kids in the road over there so I told them I said, ‘the people to ask would be my kids because they know everybody around here,’ so after talking to my son, Ian, he took them right over to the house which is right around the corner, like two and a half blocks away I would say. That’s kind of crazy for two kids to be running around that young,” said one neighbor who did not want to be identified.

Police located the parents who said they were sleeping and were surprised to learn the boys had gotten out through a back door.

A ten-month old baby girl was in the parent’s home. All three children were taken into protective custody.

“I think they deserve to have their kids taken away. If you can’t sit there and take care of your kids like a parent is supposed to, what’s the point of having kids?” said another neighbor who did not want his name used.

People Newswatch 16 spoke with say not only is it a miracle those kids weren’t hit by a car, but the Lackawaxen River is just steps away from where the children were found. They could have fallen in.

“It’s just hard to think that somebody would let those little kids do that. She seemed pretty responsible, but I don’t know how that happened,” said Eve Rogers of Honesdale.

Some who know the parents say they seem attentive; the mother was always with her kids, and this could happen to anyone.

“It’s shocking because she’s normally out with them, and they snuck out the back door. It’s really shocking,” said Paige Hendel of Honesdale.
