Wendy’s Sells Major Stake In Arby’s To Private Equity Group

HAZLETON -- If you ate at Wendy's in the past several months, you may want to check your bank account.

The restaurant chain says hackers got into customers' credit card and debit card information.

Since January, Wendy's has been looking into possible fraudulent charges to customers' credit cards.

Last month they announced customers at 300 stores should be concerned, but now that number has grown to more than 1,000 stores, including  some in Luzerne County.

Wendy's is the latest chain to be hit by hackers.

Wendy's says credit and debit card information has swiped from more than 1,000 restaurants, including this one in downtown Hazleton.

The chain is asking customers to check their accounts.

The restaurants involved include locations in Hazleton, Wilkes-Barre, Drums, and Edwardsville.

"It's scary. You just have to be really careful these days," said Diane Yakus of Hazleton. "I recently did have my credit card stolen, so I'm used to that, so I have been using cash ever since."

Some customers feel the hack is more and more reason to switch from credit cards to old fashioned cash.

"My husband had credit cards; he cut them up. That was it. No more credit cards, no bank cards, you know! He's smart like that. He just uses cash," said Lydia Buckley of Hazle Township.

But Buckley used a credit card to pay for lunch at this Wendy's in Hazleton.

Now hearing about the hack, she's a little uneasy, but Wendy's is offering one year of free credit monitoring to anyone who paid with a card at any of the 1,025 locations where customer information was hacked.

Wendy's believes it was able to fix a malware issue that helped hackers access their system.

The hackers may have had that access from as early as last October up until last month.

The full list of Wendy's affected is posted here.
