MOUNT POCONO -- Some residents in part of Monroe County are hoping to soon be able to have chicken in their backyards.

Right now in Mount Pocono, no livestock of any kind is allowed in residential areas, but some people are asking for that rule to be changed.

"Chickens by themselves don't make that much noise," said borough resident Jeff Kulich. "Then, of course, it would make a difference it they were free roaming or in a cage, I guess, too, you know. It might be a problem for neighbors and traffic and everything else."

Borough council is now considering changing the livestock ordinance.

Only chickens would be allowed, and those chickens would have to be contained in a fenced area or housing, be well maintained and fed.

"If you take care of them, just like any other creature, you are not going to run into as many problems," said resident Robin Transue.

"It's a trend now. I see people having these cages and actually renting them and then they have eggs in the morning. I guess it's just a new trend," said Kulich.

One family actually built a chicken coop but then they had to get rid of their chickens once they were told they couldn't have them. So they are hoping their coop is filled up again soon.

When Robin Transue and her family moved to Mount Pocono a few years ago, they decided to do a home school project with baby chicks. Soon after, they were told they had to get rid of them because they were not allowed in residential areas.

She hopes she can soon have chickens again.

"I was thrilled when someone showed up and said something. I was absolutely ecstatic. I jumped right up and said, 'yes, we will get the chickens back!'"

Borough council in Mount Pocono is scheduled to chat about the chickens at its meeting on July 20.
