MAHANOY CITY -- More allegations have surfaced against a police department in Schuylkill County.

This comes after the Mahanoy City Police Department is already being investigated after $10,000 was reported missing from the evidence room.

State police are investigating at least half dozen new allegations involving the Mahanoy City Police Department, including accusations that one police officer may have mishandled evidence money or flat out stole it.

A state police van was parked outside the Mahanoy City Police Department Tuesday as a forensics team searched inside.

The investigation is connected to one that began in April. At that time, borough police weren't able to turn over $10,000 from a 2014 drug bust.

Investigators discovered the money was missing from the Mahanoy City police evidence room.

Immediately after news of this broke, the borough's police chief suddenly retired and another officer was suspended with pay.

"Certain individuals have come forward and told some interesting stories," said Schuylkill County District Attorney Christine Holman.

At least a half dozen people have come forward, saying they were arrested and money was seized, but when they were released, their money was never returned. They believe the same person who took the 2014 drug bust money also has their cash.

"It should be noted that law enforcement is answering calls and taking this matter very seriously, as far as allegations against other law enforcement," Holman added.

The D.A. says if state police cannot find the missing money in the Mahanoy City police evidence room, she expects to file charges soon.
